Description

FreeMat is an excellent development environment for engineering data management. It provides many of the same features as MATLAB or IDL, such as the ability to open existing M files or create new ones, cut, copy, paste, find and replace items from any document, and set or clear breakpoints. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use, making it a great choice for those looking for a powerful yet user-friendly development environment.

From the developer:

FreeMat is an environment for rapid engineering and scientific processing. It is similar to commercial systems such as MATLAB from Mathworks and IDL from Research Systems, but is Open Source. The present version includes a number of bug fixes and some cleaned up tests and documentation.
