I've been using jEdit for years now, and I can honestly say that it's one of the best text editors out there. It's incredibly powerful and feature-rich, with a wide array of plugins that can be used to extend its functionality even further. Syntax highlighting, UTF8 and Unicode encodings, and automatic indentation make the editing process easy and efficient. The search and replace functions are powerful and intuitive, and the ability to record and store macros is a great time-saver. All in all, jEdit is a great text editor that I highly recommend.

jEdit 5.6 could be downloaded from the developer's website when we last checked. We cannot confirm if there is a free download of this software available. The following versions: 5.6, 5.5 and 5.4 are the most frequently downloaded ones by the program users. JEdit belongs to Development Tools.

The default filenames for the program's installer are jedit.exe or javaw.exe etc. This free program is an intellectual property of jEdit Team.

We cannot guarantee that the program is safe to download as it will be downloaded from the developer's website. Before launching the program, check it with any free antivirus software. JEdit works fine with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP/XP Professional/Vista/7/8/10/11.

From the developer:

jEdit is an open-source text editor designed for programmers. Its features auto indent and syntax highlighting for more than 200 languages. A large number of character encodings are supported including UTF8 and Unicode. Built-in macro language implements an extensible plugin architecture; plugins can be downloaded and installed from within jEdit using the "plugin manager" feature.

You may want to check out more software, such as Rational Rose Professional J Edition or SyncJEdit, which might be similar to jEdit.
