Description
CD Reader, developed by Ali Evren Küt, is an indispensable tool in the System Utilities category, with a specific focus on Backup & Restore. The most recent version, 2.0.0005, brings enhanced functionality for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11 users. This open source software is particularly effective in recovering data from damaged or corrupted CDs and DVDs, making it an essential utility for anyone looking to rescue important files from deteriorating discs.
CD Reader accurately recovers individual files or entire discs that your optical drive struggles to read due to scratches or other surface damages. Compatible with various iterations like 2.0, 1.0, and 0.8, the latest version stands out for its reliability and speed. The program file names for installation include CD Reader.exe, CdReader.exe, and CD_Reader.exe.
One of the most appealing aspects is that CD Reader is entirely free to use, ensuring you don't have to worry about additional costs when you need to download it. This software operates from a straightforward, easy-to-navigate interface, making data recovery a smooth process even for less tech-savvy users.
Crash prevention is another highlight of CD Reader; it ensures your PC remains responsive throughout the scanning process. The scan duration is only limited by the amount of data present on the CD or DVD, thus providing a fast and efficient recovery experience.
Pros:
- Open source and free to use
- Compatible with multiple Windows OS versions
- User-friendly and straightforward interface
- Fast and reliable data recovery from damaged discs
- Prevents PC from freezing during scans
Cons:
- Limited to CDs and DVDs; does not support Blu-ray or other storage media
- Recovery success rate depends on the extent of disc damage

This is EXACTLY what I needed! However, not sure if I'm doing something wrong -- the 'program' seems to read the CD contents, but when pressing the 'Copy Selected Files' button, nothing seems to be happening. . . help? :-(
I've tried several other software out there and this one's the 1st that actually read the contents of the CD I'm trying to salvage files from. (It was created on an OLD machine back in 2006 & for some reason, none of my current computers will 'read' the CD although it's confirmed (now) that there are files on it!) If anyone knows of any other software like this one that actually works for recovering files from a CD-ROM, let me know, please.
