GenScriber is a transcription editor for genealogical, historical and other records.
The interface is comprised of several resizable windows within a single main window.

Relating my experience with downloading current Genscriber. As of right now what you will see is an old-fashioned list of files with operating systems as name. I selected Windows, and another list came up with names of versions of various files that the developer, Les Hardy, has been working on.Do not panic. Among them are some updated versions of Genscriber. The most recent is a beta version of 2.7.3, along with 2.7.2, and I believe 2.7.1. Personally, I avoid beta versions, but that is largely a consequence of Microsoft having a habit of releasing products that should have been labeled beta with caution. I have been in contact with Les in the past, and know him to be highly conscientious. But I chose to download the 2.7.2 version anyway. I got a warning that the file might be untrustworthy because it came from an unrecognized source. But I trust Les, so ignored the warning.What downloaded was a zip file called genscriber_272_win64.zip, which checked out clean. Because my file system is in arrears (an error by my former cloud service that I won't get into), I decided to open a new folder in my C drive for Genscriber and unzipped the file there. It resulted in one file, genscriber272.exe. Opened that, and the install popup appeared. I navigated to the same folder for installation, which went well.The last version I'd used was from back before the pandemic, so I expected some changes. A little exploration showed a cleaner version of the very workable program I was used to. I changed the layout to the side by side that I prefer, and liked the look. I took a look at the preferences, but made few changes (that will come in use, perhaps). The layout of the preferences is a little clunky looking but at least not confusing. So I'm satisfied. I've got some new original documents to transcribe, and now I'm looking forward to it.
