Review

Not only seasoned shutterbugs and image professionals, but also mere mortals who own a digital camera often have tons of similar photos stored on their PCs that create a mess and take up lots of disk space. Image Comparer uses a unique algorithm to effectively find duplicate and similar images on your hard drive, so that you could rearrange them or delete unnecessary ones.

The software makes it possible to compare images within one folder (called gallery or image group in the program) or perform comparison between pictures stored in different folders. Moreover, it does not matter whether photos are of different format or size – such image pairs will also be detected. You can set the software to search for exact duplicates only or for all similar images.

Image Comparer does a good job of finding pairs of pictures which are slight modifications of each other. For instance, if you edit a picture, you result in having one color and one black and white image, or an original and a retouched image, etc. Probably, you no longer need the originals, but you just forget about them. In this case, Image Comparer will quickly detect such pairs and will let you get rid of this dead wood.

Unfortunately, the software rarely finds pairs of images one of which is cropped of the original size. At the same time, Image Comparer is very good at finding pictures which are made as a result of several successive shots of one object. Of course, the program is not able to determine the best shot (as some might assume reading the developer’s description) but you can easily delete pictures you like least.

It is also useful that you can adjust similarity threshold that will be used during image search. Yet, results of searches with a lower similarity threshold may surprise you. Our other complaints are the absence of a help file (though the comparison wizard partly makes up for it) and some stability problems that occur when you try to process very large collections of images.
