PlayStation Portable or PSP, for short is mainly designed for gaming, but it can also be used as a media player allowing you to watch movies or listen to music whenever you want. However, a problem that many users encounter is the fact that these devices don't offer support for electronic books (eBooks). So, what can you do if you want to read an eBook that you have stored on your computer as a PDF file (a portable document format designed for storing all types of electronic documents, including eBooks) on a PSP device?

A simple solution is converting your electronic book to a sequence of images that can be read by PSP and I will show you how to do that using the freeware eBook to Images 1.0 designed by Merlin Software. This application was chosen mainly because of its multiple customization features and professional-looking interface (and the fact that it is free to use).

You will need to download the following software to follow along with this tutorial.

Here is the step-by-step guide that will help you convert your PDF eBook so that you can read it on your PSP device.

Step 1

Open your PDF eBook (You can either drag-and-drop it to the interface or click on the "Open eBook" button)

Step 2

Select Sony PSP as the "MP3 Player" from the drop-down menu list (there are two menus, one for the company name and second for the device) as shown in the image below

Step 3

Choose between JPG, BMP and PNG (again, by using the drop-down menu) to set  the desired image format for the output files.

Step 3.1

You can modify how the resulting images will look like by inverting the colors between the background and text, choose to display page numbers, rotate the pictures or use Anti-Aliasing for a smooth font. The preview function will help you view any changes to be made.

Step 3.2

You can also change the font and encoding used for the text, provide values for margins or select how many images per folder you want to obtain (as seen in the image below)

Step 4

Click on the "Convert to Images" button to start the conversion.

After clicking the button, you will be asked if you want to add a cover image. If you agree to do that, you will have to provide an image that you have stored on your computer

Extras
 a. Edit the loaded PDF eBook and replace any desired word throughout the entire document.

Conclusion

After the conversion process is finished, eBook to Images 1.0 will automatically create a folder on your desktop where all the images will be placed. You can also open the folder by clicking on the "Show Results" button. You can even use this application to copy the output to your PSP device (if it is connected to your computer, obviously) simply by pressing the "Copy to Player" button.

As you can see, creating a sequence of small images from your PDF eBook so that you can read it on your PSP device is a fairly simple process and, if you follow the guide, you shouldn't have any trouble doing it.
